Garden 160 sits at an unusual site, at the corner of St. Andrews Street and Glebe Street, across from the Gaslight district’s service lane. This project re-orients the site by wrapping the building form to frame its two main courtyards. In doing so, it weaves together a neighbourhood that is largely engaged with living in its created gardens, as well as attracting people through the Gaslight district’s own courtyard and to the park across St. Andrews. As part of the neighbourhood proposal, the existing Dickson School which currently sits abandoned atop the hill, will be revitalized as a community centre which will stand separate from the residential proposal yet add close amenity to the building’s residents.
In light of Cambridge’s vision for a densified city, this project attempts to add both density and amenity on the site of the river that will have less of both, compared to the city center by the ION station. It is an important aspect of the strategy to see Galt as a unified neighbourhood with connections on both sides of the river, as well as addressing a missing middle between the Gaslight district and the surrounding single family neighbourhood. Better yet, the pedestrian bridge makes this proposal only a 6 minute walk from the ION station.
